First Full Week
EP Rock Team:
There had been some questions about CKLA and supports for our students receiving ELL services. The following is the joint answers to FAQs for elementary staff from Teaching/Learning and Student Services.
Can we get CKLA materials translated into Spanish (or other languages) ?
The purpose of the language arts teaching block is to provide instruction in and development of English literacy skills. Translating all materials would not help to teach English literacy skills and may actually become more of a barrier. Students need opportunities to practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English. At times, it is appropriate to translate some materials into their primary language but fully translating workbooks and resources will not serve to support the acquisition of English language. Modifying workbooks or work expectations is appropriate.
How can I engage my students who do not speak any English if I can't give them materials in their primary language?
There are supports within the CKLA resource that can be used. Some ideas can be found in the CKLA manual along the side bar. These are represented by a hand indicating suggestions. Students can access an audio version of the readers in their Amplify hub, many stories are translated. EL teachers will soon have access to Language Studio Prime which will be used to help pre-teach many of the skills. (This is going to be slowly rolled out though so be patient with them!) Be sure to provide visual supports and cues as much as possible (even beyond language arts instruction).
Why do we provide math workbooks in Spanish but not CKLA?
Math instruction is provided in English and problem solving steps are modeled. Students need to demonstrate an understanding of these concepts. The purpose of the math journal is not to evaluate their understanding of the English language.
Isn't there a CKLA Resource that is in Spanish?
That particular resource, called Caminos, is not a straight translation but would be used in tandem with CKLA in a Spanish bi-lingual program. A bi-lingual program provides instruction in both English and Spanish with the purpose being on developing English skills while also helping children maintain their Spanish language skills. Hudson does not have a bi-lingual program.
Remember that sometimes the most important thing you can do for a newcomer is to help them feel safe and welcome. Use as many visuals as you can, offer directions/instructions at a slower rate (not a louder volume), and modify the work expectations. Consult with your building's EL teacher and instructional coach to brainstorm ways to support EL students.
